The industry is the most technologically advanced it has ever been with recent advancements in virtual reality (VR) and the technology that is being used in modern day PCs and consoles. Games have become so realistic that it is almost hard to believe where it all started.
Gaming has become so big that it is even turning into a career for many, with the rise of esports and live streaming platforms. However, this isn’t new, competitive gaming actually began back in 1980 when Atari held the Space Invaders Championships, which saw some 10,000 participants compete.
Things haven’t always been an easy ride, however, with the industry facing the Great Video Game Crash in 1983. The market became oversaturated with poor quality clones of major games as companies tried to gain a foothold in the industry. Consumers become disinterested and therefore the industry saw a large decline in sales. However, things were pulled back not long after, with the release of some new consoles such as the NES and Sega Master System.
40 years have passed since the beginning of gaming and over this time many milestones have been reached, those of which can be seen in the below infographic created by online gaming retailer Fanatical.
